TikTok banned from U.S.? Business owners fear having to lay off employees

Since the launch of TikTok Shop last year, users have begun purchasing products directly through the app, and now this equates to millions of dollars for small and medium-sized businesses across the country, including a mother from Milford who employs dozens of other mothers. The question is: if there were an actual TikTok ban, what would happen to them?

President Biden has signed legislation that could mean the end of TikTok in the United States. Congress has given the company 12 months to find a buyer in the US or face a ban in this country, but this holds significant implications for entrepreneurs who have seen explosive growth in sales on the platform, especially since the launch of TikTok Shop.

Whatever you thought TikTok was, silly dances or funny videos, it’s much bigger than that now. The algorithm sends users a continuous feed of entertainment, news, and, yes, big business. It has become a whole ecosystem of information and consumerism.

Michelle Silva, from Milford, owns Kali Rose Boutique, named after her daughter. “I don’t think people really understand, it might be owned by China, but the amount of people in the United States who would be affected by this… it’s… almost every small business right now is on TikTok Shop,” Silva said. Silva built a highly successful business selling inclusive-size clothing for women from 0 to 24x, and saw sales skyrocket with TikTok Shop. “Honestly, it’s been a blessing,” said Silva.
