Jerry Seinfeld Criticizes Political Correctness in Comedy Industry

Renowned comedian Jerry Seinfeld recently criticized “the extreme left” for what he perceives as an excessive emphasis on political correctness, hindering humor in television comedies. Seinfeld, known for his humor on the hit show “Seinfeld” – the most-watched comedy of its time in 1998 – compared the current state of television comedy to its status in the past.

“People always need [comedy],” he said on The New Yorker Radio Hour. “They don’t get it.” Seinfeld reminisced about the days when people would return home and eagerly anticipate funny shows like “Cheers,” “MASH,” “The Mary Tyler Moore Show,” and “All in the Family.” However, he lamented the lack of genuinely funny content available today, attributing it to what he called “the extreme left and PC nonsense” that inhibits comedic expression.

Discussing the over-regulation of comedy, Seinfeld highlighted the detrimental impact of scripts passing through multiple hands and committees, resulting in diluted humor. While acknowledging the need for comedians to adapt to societal shifts, he stressed the importance of pushing boundaries. Seinfeld also noted the rise of stand-up comedy, where comedians have the freedom to take risks without fear of repercussion from committees or groups.
