Janus Films Acquires U.S. Rights to Sophy Romvari’s ‘Blue Heron’

Janus Films has acquired the U.S. rights to Sophy Romvari’s “Blue Heron,” starring Eylul Guven and Edik Beddoes. The film is set for a 2026 release.

“Blue Heron” follows Sasha (Guven), the eight-year-old daughter of a Hungarian immigrant family that relocates to Vancouver Island during the late 1990s. As the family starts to get settled in their new environment, their oldest son, Jeremy (Beddoes) begins to show increasingly antisocial and dangerous behavioral issues in their new home.

Additional cast members include Iringó Réti, Ádám Tompa, Amy Zimmer, Liam Serg, and Preston Drabble.

“It is without exaggeration to say that Janus Films has brought the majority of the greatest films of all time to audiences,” said Romvari in a statement. “For my debut feature to be brought into this legacy, by a team so dedicated to celebrating cinema and protecting the theatrical experience, is far beyond a dream come true.”

The film had its world premiere in competition at the 2025 Locarno Film Festival, winning the Swatch First Feature Award and the Junior Jury Award. In September, “Blue Heron” held its North American premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival, where it won the Best Canadian Discovery award.

“Blue Heron” was produced by Nine Behind Productions (Canada) and Boddah (Hungary) in association with Memory, Simbelle Productions, Tinygiant, and Ursa Major with funding from Telefilm Canada and the National Film Institute Hungary. MoreThan Films will represent international sales.

Producers for “Blue Heron” include Romvari, Ryan Bobkin, Sara Wylie and Gábor Osváth. Executive Producers are Riel Roch-Decter, Lauren Melinda, Neil Champagne, Veronica Diaferia, Sara Eolin, Jasmin Karibzhanova, Sam Sutcliffe, and Leah CL.

The deal was negotiated by Janus Films and the filmmakers.
