Animated Documentary ‘Endless Cookie’ Sells to Obscured Releasing

Obscured Releasing, a new distribution company, has acquired U.S. distribution rights to “Endless Cookie” and will release the feature-length animated documentary theatrically this year. The film, directed by siblings Seth Scriver and Pete Scriver, will be released on Dec. 5 to qualify for awards.

“Endless Cookie” enjoyed an extensive festival run, premiering at Sundance and going on to win the Golden Alexander at the Thessaloniki Documentary Festival and the Contrechamp Jury Award at the Annecy International Animation Film Festival. The film is described as a “tangential fever dream,” depicting episodes of the brothers’ lives. The story takes viewers through their upbringing in Toronto’s Kensington Market to Pete’s current residence in a remote Northern Manitoba First Nation community. The filmmakers describe “Endless Cookie” as “an impressionistic and often surreal depiction of family, but it is also a documentary of the creative process.” The film took them eight years to assemble.

Obscured Releasing was co-founded by indie veterans RJ Millard and Bill Guentzler. The company acquires theatrical, digital and physical rights to narrative, documentary, and animated features for distribution throughout the United States and Canada.

“Endless Cookie” also won the Rogers Audience Award for best Canadian feature at the 2025 Hot Docs Festival. It will be shown at AFI and IDFA Festival, and additional festivals will be announced soon.

Pete and Seth are half brothers. Pete is a first nations carver, poet, mechanic and storyteller living in Shamattawa. He was recently nominated for a Hero award for saving his neighbor’s life by rescuing her from a house on fire. Seth is an artist, animator and carpenter living in Toronto. He won the best Canadian first feature award at TIFF in 2013 for his animated film “Asphalt Watches” that he created with Shayne Ehman.

Along with Seth Scriver, the film was produced by Dan Bekerman, Alex Ordanis, Jason Ryle and Chris Yurkovich, with Pete Scriver, Neil Mathieson and Jordan Hart serving as executive producers.

“Seth and Pete’s story centers on family bonds, cultural heritage and the innumerable moments that make us human,” Guentzler and Millard said. “Their animation style, reminiscent of gonzo filmmakers like Mike Judge, John Kricfalusi and R. Crumb, combined with real-life experiences to tell the most off-the-wall story of family.”

Seth Scriver said, “The goal was to make something funny, beautiful, spiritual, political, complex, simple and true.” Pete Scriver said, “It’s like discussions around the kitchen table with your family, going from one subject to another, so from politics, to Sasquatch, to trapping, or the seasons.”

The deal was negotiated by Austin Kennedy of Magnify and Guentzler and Millard of Obscured Releasing.
