Docuseries “Last Lands,” hosted by ABC News correspondent Bob Woodruff, returns for Season 2 for new on-the-front-lines dispatch from the battle to protect the health of the planet.
The two-part special will premiere on ABC News Live, Disney+ and Hulu on Thursday, Oct. 16, at 8:30 p.m. ET. The second episode will go live the following week on Oct. 23. The documentary series, presented in partnership with not-for-profit environmental organization Global Conservation, spotlights conservation efforts to preserve Earth’s most threatened ecosystems.
In the second season, Woodruff embarks on a journey to Central America — El Mirador in Guatemala and Coiba National Park in Panama — to learn how national parks act as sanctuaries that are crucial to the health of the planet and how they safeguard endangered species.
“It’s crucial to witness what’s happening to the world’s greatest parks; the threats to their land, forests, and seas are real,” Woodruff said in a statement. “If we don’t act now, our children may never experience what we’ve long taken for granted. ‘Last Lands’ isn’t just about exploring these remarkable places; it’s about telling the stories of the people fighting to save them.”
In the premiere episode Woodruff travels to El Mirador, a former thriving Mayan city now hidden by a near-impenetrable rainforest, to witness the park rangers who are risking their lives to save the rainforest at large and their heritage. The correspondent then takes viewers to Coiba National Park, which lies 15 miles on an island off the coast of Panama and is now in the middle of the world’s largest shark and humpback whale superhighways. Woodruff, as he documents the beauty of this corner of the world, also investigates the impact of cartels using the route to smuggle illegal products north.
Seni Tienabeso serves as executive producer of the series. Season 1 of “Last Lands” earned two Emmy Awards nominations and won a Webby Award in the Sustainability & Environment category.
