Canary Islands VFX Studios Power Global Productions

After years of investment, the Canary Islands’ VFX scene has reached critical mass. A cluster of independent studios and tech ventures, many founded by artists who chose to stay or return home, now delivers full-pipeline work for streamers and international features such as “The Morning Show,” “Nine Bodies In A Mexican Morgue,” and “The Accountant 2.” They share crews, talent and ambition, building a community where collaboration counts as much as competition.

Across the archipelago, companies such as 22Dogs, Derrotero, Flaming Frames and newcomers like Efectoscopio Blue and Carousel are proving that VFX work can thrive far from the traditional hubs. Meanwhile, global players such as Platige Image and AI startups like Volinga are growing the scene, blending artistry and innovation into an increasingly self-sustaining production base.

We profile some of the companies on the islands below:

22Dogs

Founded in Milan and now operating between Los Angeles and Tenerife, 22Dogs combines the reach of an international facility with the agility of a creative boutique. The studio covers the full pipeline from on-set supervision to final comp and has delivered large-scale FX and invisible work on “The Accountant 2” (Artist Equity), “Outer Banks 4” (Netflix) and “The Morning Show” (Apple). Drawn to the islands for talent, incentives and lifestyle, 22Dogs is pushing into AI-assisted workflows while keeping artistry front and centre. “We don’t just deliver visual effects — we design experiences that feel inevitable,” say its founders.

Derrotero VFX

Canary-born Derrotero, led by Daniel Pinedo, straddles film, television and live spectacle. The studio delivers full-service compositing, CGI, AR/VR and interactive installations, blending performance and technology with equal flair. Credits range from “Aire: Just Breathe” and “Y todos arderán” to immersive dinner shows like Origen in Gran Canaria. Pinedo’s roots as actor, dancer and stuntman shape his approach: every digital sequence is choreographed as much as rendered. That performance sensibility has helped Derrotero carve a niche where the physical and virtual meet in live events.

Efectoscopio Blue

A newcomer with long experience, Efectoscopio Blue launched in Las Palmas on the back of a veteran team whose members have collaborated for decades across Spain. Sister sites in Madrid, Pamplona and Barcelona feed a pipeline spanning VFX, post and virtual production. Early credits include “Code of Life” (Jonathan Lim), “Perfectos conocidos” (Javier Fesser) and “Arriba Tutto” (José Mota). Specialists in LED-volume content and photoreal set extensions, they aim to make CGI invisible yet emotionally resonant. “Created by artists for artists, we merge traditional craft with cutting-edge tech to realize directors’ visions,” says the team.

Flaming Frames

Independently founded by Ignacio Caicoya and proudly boutique, Flaming Frames focuses on photoreal compositing, FX simulations and, when the script demands, convincing gore. From “Gangs of London 3” and “Stags” to “The Famous Five” and “9 Bodies in a Mexican Morgue,” the studio delivers high-end realism from its Gran Canaria. Staffed by supervisors trained at major global facilities, it scales from 20 to 50 artists depending on show size. “As a studio we want to stay small and flexible, ready to adapt as the industry and technology keep evolving.” director and vfx supervisor Ignacio Caicoya said.

Platige Canaries

When Warsaw-based Platige Image opened its Gran Canaria branch in 2024, it signalled how firmly Spain now figures in global VFX strategy. The new hub services international film, TV and gaming clients. Platige’s 300-artist pipeline spanning Warsaw, L.A., Tokyo, Montreal and now Las Palmas delivers cinematic trailers and series work for Netflix, Apple TV+, Amazon Prime Video and Warner Bros. “The Canary Islands are a key part of our strategy,” says co-founder and exec producer Jarek Sawko.

Carousel

Run by CEO Patrick Roos, Carousel positions itself as a creative partner rather than a vendor. The Canary-based studio engages early in development, helping directors and producers shape projects through design thinking and flexible execution. Its artists span multiple disciplines, mirroring the islands’ mix of local and international talent. The islands provides not only world-class incentives but also, in Daniel’s words, “a climate that makes great work more sustainable.” Carousel’s mantra: “We’re a creative studio first; we just happen to come from VFX” sums up its collaborative ethos.

Volinga AI

Born at the Arquimea Research Center in Gran Canaria, Volinga AI is redefining environment creation. Its Gaussian-splatting technology converts real locations into photoreal 3D spaces up to 10 times faster than conventional pipelines, cutting both cost and carbon footprint. Used by Paramount, Amazon and Netflix including for “Picture From Auschwitz,” presented at Cannes. “By accelerating production and lowering environmental impact, we’re unlocking creativity,” says the team, positioning Volinga as the R&D engine behind Spain’s growing virtual production sector.
