49ers’ Draft Move Sparks Speculation: Steelers Eyeing Receiver Swap?

In the midst of the NFL Draft frenzy, the Pittsburgh Steelers launched an offensive attack in the first round, while the San Francisco 49ers opted for a strategic move rather than trading away a wide receiver.

With the 31st overall pick, San Francisco surprised many by selecting Ricky Pearsall out of Florida, igniting speculation about the future of their existing star receivers. Prior to the draft, rumors swirled regarding the potential availability of Brandon Aiyuk and Deebo Samuel. Now, with a rookie receiver joining their ranks in the first round, the likelihood of a transition seems even more plausible.

Despite Aiyuk’s contract situation and his status as a sought-after name in the receiver trade market, it appears the 49ers are charting a different course. According to Mike Silver of the San Francisco Chronicle, the team is more inclined to entertain offers for Samuel rather than Aiyuk.

Samuel, 28, presents an intriguing option for teams like the Steelers. The versatile receiver/running back boasts a cap hit of $28.6 million this season, with another $24.2 million slated for the next year. Over his five-year career, he’s amassed 4,122 receiving yards and 1,007 rushing yards, tallying 38 combined touchdowns.

In Arthur Smith’s offensive scheme, Samuel could potentially shine, but that doesn’t necessarily mean the Steelers are fully committed to him over Aiyuk. Reports suggest they’re eyeing a veteran addition to complement George Pickens, and Samuel’s two-year contract might make more sense than a long-term investment in Aiyuk.

While the specific targets may have shifted, the option to bolster their roster remains open for the Steelers, whether with the 49ers or elsewhere.
